Do You Need to Wear Underwear When Working Out?

Do You Need to Wear Underwear When Working Out?

Short Answer: YES. Absolutely.

Slick Chicks recently participated in a cycling event for women. The event was super fun, and we loved interacting with the girls afterwards. When talking with them, many of the girls expressed that they actually do not wear any underwear when they work out. They saw nothing wrong with it and believed it was better for their bodies. However, this is NOT true!

It is so important to wear underwear during your work out sessions because of two main reasons:

1. Bacteria Risks.

When you're exercising, your body is producing heat and sweat. This build up of warmth and moisture, especially in tight and non-breathable clothing, leads to making your crotch an ideal bacteria breeding ground. EW. This can lead to bacteria proliferation, which can cause horrible yeast infections and painful urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Furthermore, without underwear, the only protection your nether region has against external bacteria is a thin layer of fabric. Think about all the equipment you come in contact with during work outs -- the floor, any machine with a seat, exercise balls, etc. Think of all that bacteria that you come into contact with. Don't even get me started on the amount of bacteria spreading when other people also go commando when exercising...

2. Skin Abrasions.

If the bacteria risks weren't enough to make you take out your undies, then maybe the risk of skin abrasions will. When working out, chafing can occur on your skin from the different equipment your rub against. Chafing can cause small abrasions in your skin, and bacteria can enter. So besides the fact that chafing already sucks, bacteria can make it even worse.

Bottom line: when wearing underwear, you can protect yourself with an extra barrier against bacteria and infection.

Slick Chicks are excellent undies to wear while busting through your work out because they're moisture-wicking and super comfy. When you're done with your work out, you can easily remove them and change into a new pair.

We want you to be empowered and active while also making sure to keep your body safe from harmful bacteria. Stay fresh during your workouts by always remembering to wear underwear AND change them after your workout.

Stay empowered.

Much love,

Helya & the Slick Chicks Team xoxo
