Hope is Contagious

Hey there beauties. Happy 2018! We are back and ready for a great year! By now you know that Slick Chicks mission is to empower ALL women everywhere, every day! That being said, we couldn’t think of a better way to begin this year than to introduce you to a remarkable lady whose passion is providing motivation for everyone she meets. We are lucky to call Megan Hammond our newest ambassador and add her to our family of phenomenal lady advocates who work daily and aspire to make the world we all live in a better place.

Megan is a fellow blogger who inspires change in others with disabilities by sharing tips, tricks, and personal stories, as she herself navigates this life on a set of wheels. She believes "empowerment is the key”. We told you she was a perfect Slick Chick! This magnificent woman lives by the mantra, “Where there is life, there is hope”.

Having just an ounce of hope often brings out amazing, unbridled strength in a person during tragic times. Megan is no stranger to rocky roads, as she was involved in a motorcycle accident in 2007; subsequently leaving her with a spinal cord injury. This dynamic woman has turned her rocky road of obstacles, into a smooth path to success. These days she uses that same fiery spirit to show others that all is possible as long as you keep a fierce mindset.

Can you give us an example of when you had to use your own personal advocacy skills?

I have advocated on a small and large level. In my personal life, whenever I travel or go to unfamiliar places, speaking up and asking for accessibility features or describing what I need to continue to be independent is how I use my advocacy skills the most. I have traveled to Washington D.C. to speak with congressional leaders about disability related items and why I need access to certain features or medical equipment.

What advice would you give to a young girl to navigate society today?

I would tell young women to always be confident in themselves. Society does not always portray positivism when it comes to having a disability. But, if we continue to be confident in ourselves, we can eventually break the mold and break the stereotypes.

Describe yourself in 3 words and tell us why you chose those words?

I would describe myself as driven, passionate, and caring. When I get my mind set on something, I will not stop until I accomplish that task. When I find a good cause or something that I really like, I will not stop talking about it. Some might call it obsessive, but I call it passion. I genuinely care about others and want to help everyone I meet. I started my blog, The Wheel Life Blog, to share my story and how I do things to inspire and motivate others.

What does the word empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment, to me, means standing up for what you believe in, advocating for ourselves, being confident, and living by the words you speak; it also means persevering through all the challenges that life throws at us.

Can you give us an example of a time when you felt most empowered?

I feel the most empowered when I am helping others figure out their new way of living. I mentor others with spinal cord injuries, especially new injuries, and seeing the light bulb “turn on” when talking with them is an amazing feeling.

What is your personal definition of beauty and when do you feel most beautiful?

I believe beauty is a feeling of confidence. It could be after working out or doing something that promotes my healthy lifestyle. Or, it’s when I am all dolled up and headed out with friends for a night of laughter. I feel my most beautiful when I am doing something that serves me and my best interest.

Michelle Obama once said, “You will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have”. Slick Chicks welcomes Megan to our ambassador family and thanks her for the amazing work she does as an advocate. Megan, much like the former first lady, reminds us to “Keep hope alive and spread the love!”
