December 3rd: International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3rd: International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities from the Slick Chicks team! We are beyond excited to continue to grow within our diverse community and look forward to furthering our relationships with you all.

This Thursday, December 3rd, marks the 28th anniversary of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Since 1992, the United Nations has observed this day to further efforts for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a day meant to encourage and value all individuals in our communities regardless of our visible or invisible differences.

The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly made life more difficult to navigate for everyone. Disrupted routines and isolation from others is proving detrimental to the mental health states of individuals on a global scale. For those with disabilities, this pandemic has furthered frustrations with daily navigational practices. What was already difficult to manage has turned even more laborious.

As a society, we must begin to recognize that some of us are given more accessibility than others. Products and services need to be designed in order to account for the abilities of all, not just a select few. This mindset goes hand in hand with efforts of sustainability and inclusivity. In order to support these efforts, we must be willing to contribute directly to them. The simplest way you can do this is to purchase products/services from businesses that value these efforts (like us)!

On Thursday, you are able to contribute to the inclusion of society by showing recognition for and participating in the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. By doing this, you are showing your support for a more inclusive planet, regardless of certain characteristics that society may choose to define us by.
