Help Further Awareness This International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities from the Slick Chicks team!

Today, Saturday December 3rd, marks the 30th anniversary of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Since 1992, the United Nations has observed this day to further efforts for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a day meant to encourage and value all individuals in our communities regardless of our visible or invisible differences.

Today you are able to contribute to the inclusion of society by showing recognition for diverse representation. By doing this, you are showing your support for a more inclusive planet, regardless of certain characteristics that society may choose to define us by. With each passing year, it seems that society is becoming more aware of a lack of diverse representation in the media — and because of social media, these issues are being nipped in the bud. Below are three things that we praise the increasing awareness of and a few ways you can help spread this awareness:

The Paralympic Games

Since its origin in 1960, the Paralympic Games have continued to inspire and raise awareness about sporting possibilities for those with disabilities. The broadcasting of these games has reached so many individuals internationally that would have never otherwise been exposed to these sporting possibilities.

Push for Proper Accessibility

In order to keep the momentum going between events, we encourage you to push for proper investment at your local fitness and recreation facilities. Lack of accessibility continues to be a block for those hoping to participate in sporting activities in their hometown. With your help, this can change!

Employment Practices

This year, Disability Employment Awareness Month saw a tremendous wave of support on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. With this increasing awareness, companies/organizations have been held accountable by their employees to introduce inclusive practices in their place of work.

Encourage Training

Encourage diversity training at your place of work. These training programs provide individuals with the communication and interpersonal skills they need to build a positive and inclusive work environment for all.

Inclusive Product Innovation

With each passing year, more and more brands continue to emerge with inclusive product lines. These new products have spanned across the beauty, health & wellness, apparel, sport, and tech industries.

Use Your Influence

Reach out to brands that you love aesthetically that don’t offer inclusive products and ask them to consider making them. Or, if your favorite brands are inclusive (like us!), reach out to them with feedback on their products. Here at Slick Chicks, we take this feedback into great consideration and use it to perfect our current products and create future products. What you have to say matters!

Thank you so much for bringing light to this very important day for so many of us in the disabled community. I love that your brand not only is inclusive, but strives to empower the wearers of your clothes. And thank you for helping to both educate others and inspire more brands to address every type of body, and every type of person. Much love to slickchicks!
